See the Cultural Wonders of Kyushu

Journey to Japan’s Kyushu island to experience its mystical shrines, geological marvels, popular landmarks and more.

About Your Trip

Uncover the mystique of Kyushu on this unforgettable DreamTrip across Japan’s 3rd-largest island. Your journey begins with visits to Sakurajima, one of the most active volcanos in the world, and the Arimura Lava Observatory. You will also see the Udo Jingu Shrine, a popular site that’s believed to bestow a happy marriage on young couples, as well as Onino Sentakuita, the otherworldly rock formations set in perfectly straight rows on Aoshima Island’s coast.

Set out the next morning on a full-day tour of Kirishima to visit the opulent Kirishima Jingu Shrine and then continue to Takachiho Farm for a savory barbecue lunch, a petting zoo and a hands-on experience making dairy products .

On your final tour, relax in an Ibusuki sand bath heated by natural steam, followed by a soothing soak in a hot spring. Once rejuvenated, you will be ready for a visit to the lively Tenmonkan shopping area filled with stores, restaurants and much more.

What we love:
• The multicourse kaiseki meal is a special event and the epitome of Japanese haute cuisine, featuring fresh seasonal (and often local) ingredients that are meticulously prepared, artfully plated and served with hospitality.
• Set in a cliff cave facing the sea, Udo Jingu Shrine houses the deity Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto, the father of Jimmu, the 1st Emperor of Japan.
• Sakurajima was actually an island until 1914, when lava flows from its eruption bridged it with Osumi Peninsula.

Destination

Kyushu, Japan, is a subtropical island known for active volcanos, including Sakurajima, one of the most popular sightseeing destinations in the area. The island is also home to one of the world’s largest active calderas, Aso Caldera, as well as lush flora and plentiful hot springs.

The island offers something for every taste. Its most populous city, Fukuoka, is filled with historic sites and modern attractions, including many museums and art galleries that tell the robust story of Kyushu. The seaside city of Kagoshima, meanwhile, is renowned for pottery, Satsuma Kiriko cut glass and delicate Oshima Tsumugi fabric. Miyazaki is Kyushu’s primary shopping destination and a substantial contributor to the island’s travel industry — attractions include the SeaGaia event center and the Miyazaki City Phoenix Zoo. Visitors can also get their adrenaline pumping while surfing some of Japan’s best waves or stretching their legs on a scenic hike.
